Modernising a Cloud Data Platform to Reduce Costs and Deliver Real-Time, Trusted Insights.

Our client is a well-known player in the construction industry with a significant presence across the country.

As a trusted partner for builders, contractors, and architects, they provide a wide range of products and services to support large-scale construction projects. Recognising the potential of data to drive better decision-making and streamline processes, the client engaged us to assist in modernising their data infrastructure and analytics capabilities.

The Challenge

The client was facing several challenges, including rising cloud costs and limited access to timely, reliable data for decision-making.

As they transitioned to a new Microsoft Dynamics ERP system, it became clear their existing data architecture in Microsoft Synapse was both inefficient and expensive to maintain. Inconsistent data and outdated reporting further complicated their ability to gain accurate insights when needed.

To stay competitive in the evolving construction industry, they needed a solution that would not only address these challenges, but also future-proof them.

Our Approach

To tackle our client’s challenges, we implemented a strategic solution designed to reduce costs, modernise their data infrastructure, and future-proof their operations:

  1. Cloud Optimisation Health Check
We started by conducting a thorough audit and assessment of the client’s platform architecture, data pipelines, and strategic goals, identifying inefficiencies and costs savings.
  2. Cloud Platform Recommendation & Data Architecture Design
After completing the health check, we recommended migrating to Microsoft Fabric to reduce costs, streamline operations, and future-proof the platform. We then developed a high-level architecture that detailed the setup, monitoring processes, access controls, and security measures, providing a clear implementation blueprint.
  3. Developing a Prioritised Data Product Roadmap
Through a series of workshops and stakeholder interviews, we mapped the existing data landscape, identified key business needs, and gathered in-depth requirements. This enabled us to define crucial metrics and develop data products aligned with business objectives, culminating in a prioritised roadmap focused on delivering high-impact, data-driven solutions.
  4. Data Platform Modernisation and Reporting
We rebuilt the data architecture within a secure Microsoft Fabric environment, incorporating best practices in governance and data integration to create a scalable platform that simplifies data management and enhances security. The new platform also supported real-time data streaming, providing up-to-date insights.

Alongside this, we implemented self-service reporting via Power BI, giving teams access to trusted data and underlying semantic datasets for deeper analysis. With training and support, teams were empowered to fully leverage these tools for more informed, data-driven decision-making.
  5. Ongoing Support
Following the implementation of the modernised data platform and reporting system, we provided ongoing support to ensure smooth day-to-day operations and address any minor adjustments based on evolving business needs.

The Outcome

By migrating to Microsoft Fabric and optimising their data infrastructure, the client achieved a significant reduction in costs related to cloud operations.

The new scalable data architecture empowered teams with secure, self-service access to trusted data via Power BI and a centralised data hub, enabling them to conduct detailed analyses independently. Additionally, the prioritised roadmap ensured future development efforts were aligned with key business objectives, driving sustainable long-term value.

Most importantly, the solution future-proofed their data environment, ensuring they avoid future costly migrations and are well-positioned to continue their digital transformation and pursue new growth opportunities.
